Although he didn’t know it at the time, David’s background, at every step, has uniquely prepared him for what he does now — protecting client’s wealth and peace of mind through uncommonly effective estate planning.

Attorney’s Title Guaranty Fund, 1993 to 1995

Beginning during the spring of his first year in law school, Dave worked at the corporate legal department of a real estate title insurance company in Champaign, Illinois. His tasks included research projects, analysis, and article writing on real estate title issues that arose for the company and its attorney members.

Illinois Supreme Court, 1995 to 1996

After graduating from law school in 1995 (click HERE for more info on Dave’s education), Dave was one of four attorneys serving as law clerks to Illinois Supreme Court Justice James D. Heiple in Peoria. During the year he served, Dave was involved in researching and writing the court’s legal opinions for cases heard before it. In addition, he helped review the many petitions filed with the court, of which the court only chose a small percentage to hear. Some of the decisions he helped draft are still important today and continue to be quoted by other courts and attorneys. Plus, he is one of the few people around who can say that he once spent a night in a guest room on the top floor of the Illinois Supreme Court building just down the hall from the judges’ private quarters!

Giffin, Winning, Cohen & Bodewes, P.C., 1996 to 2008

As Dave’s time with the Illinois Supreme Court drew to a close, he began job hunting, knowing that he wanted to stay in Central Illinois. He submitted resumes and had many interviews throughout the area, including Peoria, Bloomington, Decatur, Champaign, and Springfield. With several offers to consider, he joined the law firm of Giffin, Winning, Cohen & Bodewes, P.C. as an associate attorney and later became a shareholder in the firm in 2004.  Over the years, he gain valuable experience in representing banks and creditors attempting to collect debts in state court and bankruptcy court, handling property tax disputes, representing clients in real estate and business transactions, preparing numerous appeals in state and federal court (including cases before the Illinois Supreme Court), and assisting families after the loss of a loved one, as well as helping clients with wills, trusts, and estate planning and beginning to develop his proven planning process now available at Edwards Group LLC.
